Fierro Strength and Conditioning
Derick, coach and combat veteran at Fierro, saw the need in Logan County to provide physical and mental health opportunities to our local first responders. MHDAS Board mini-grant funding provides CrossFit memberships to 9 first responders. The program not only provides physical health benefits, but also a needed stress reliever, social engagement opportunities with the citizens they serve, and a CrossFit community that provides a supportive environment. |

Discovery Riders
Thursdays are SEL Days at Discovery Riders - SEL stands for Social-Emotional Learning. The unique program tailor specifically to mental health and how to learn ways to cope and regulate emotions through horse-assisted activities. The riders analyzed different horses and their movements and mannerisms and asked to write words that describe how the horse felt, then the riders were asked the same question - how they feel. It was interesting to see that there were similar words written in both categories. This exercise showed that both horses and people can experience the same emotions. |
Messiah Community of Urbana
One project involved creating opportunities for social engagement with the residents of the Messiah Community. Lily Jones, a local artist and OSU graduate, came and taught 15 members on how to paint a beautiful sunset. The end result was 2 hours of lunch, laughter, getting to know each other, and finding our creative spirits. Another art class is planned for the fall. After such a trying, lonely year of COVID, this was just what the doctor ordered. MHDAS is happy to fund projects like this one through the mini-grant process. |
